Dear Parents,
It's hard to believe the first quarter of the year is almost over. Looking ahead to the 2nd quarter of school here are the focuses for reading.
1st grade: long vowels and silent e are introduced. Students are beginning to re-tell a story
starting at level 7-8. During a re-tell students are asked to state the setting, characters and events of the story. They are also asked to make a personal connection.
2nd grade: vowel patterns are introduce ai, ea, ow , ou ect. They also continue to work with long and short vowels and blends patterns. Student are asked to retell the stories problem and solution and author's message.
3rd and 4th grade: The focus is reading and comprehending non-fiction text. Students are asked to identify the main idea and supporting details. By the end of the quarter students are asked to summarize what they have read.

Dear Parents,
Reading Club has been up and running for about a month now and I am please to say the children are learning the routines of reading club. I am seeing progress being made in just a few short weeks.
Below is a list of focuses for each grade level:
FIRST: ending sounds, segmenting sounds in two, three and four letter words. H-A-T. We are practicing our wall words everyday along with the letters and letter sounds.
SECOND: We are focusing blends, sh, ch, str etc. We are also working on the first 100 sight words. Many of the students know these words in isolation but when they are in the books they can't recall them. We are practicing retelling the events in the story and facts from our non-fiction stories.
THIRD & FOURTH: Fluency, everyone is working on building their fluency through reading phrases that are made up of high frequency words. They are reading with partners for one minutes to see how many phrases they can read. Their goal is to improve each day. We are also working on making predictions as we read. Students are learning to
word map. Ask them what this means. We are learning new vocabulary with each story.
Finally, I will be tracked out from September 6th -16th. When I return classes will resume. Please contact me with questions or comments. Peggy Blocker
