Happy Valentine's Day to all of you. This point in the school year all tracks have been to school for over 100 days. Reading club children and all working on self-monitoring their
reading. What does this mean? Well in different grades it means different things.
Kindergarten- Second grade is all about self-monitoring their reading for accuracy. They should be able to cross-check their reading to make sure that what they have said for a tricky word both looks right and makes sense. Many children get in the habit of just reading
and not stopping to see if they made a mistake. Or they believe an adult will stop them if they
made a mistake and therefore will continue to read unless someone tells them to fix something in their reading. This is a habit you don't want your child to develop. So, when they are reading to you at home let them make errors and then ask these prompting questions.
Did what you read sound right? Look right or make sense? If they answer no to any of these
they need to go back and re-read to self-correct. The power in this activity is for the student to figure how where and how to correct their error and praise praise praise.
Third- fifth grades self-monitoring is about comprehension and understanding what they have read. There are many reasons why comprehension breaks down but your child need to identify the cause so they can correct it. Below is a chart I share with my students:
Monitoring Comprehension
hy meaning breaks down What to do about it
Fatigue Reread to gain meaning
Not enough background Focus and read the words
knowledge more carefully than usual.
Don’t like the book Choose another book
Too hard Think about what you know
and try to connect it to new
information.
Boring Choose another book if
possible or talk to someone
who finds the topic
interesting.
