Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great holiday. I can't believe we are in our third quarter of school. This is a big quarter for the K-2 students. Typically, children from the ages of 6-8 make the most growth in reading in the months of January thru March. So I
have high expectations for your child.
This quarter’s focus for K-2 students is comprehension. It is during this time that your child has gained the knowledge of how to sound out and decode an unfamiliar word but the question is can they comprehend what they have read? So, parents its not enough for your child to read their stories aloud to you at night but now you need to ask them questions about what they have read. They need to be able to: name characters, tell setting, explain the events in the story in a sequential order, name the problem and the solution and tell the lesson learned in the story and finally make a connection. As you can see this is a lot of comprehension so the more practice you give your child the better they will become.
3-5 students focus for this quarter is comparing and contrasting stories, identifying the author’s point of view and using their CROP QV strategies for comprehension.
Please continue to read nightly with your child and check out some of my links to improve your child’s comprehension.
